Too Poor for electricity
too broke to own phone
But living in that old rat shack
I was never Quite alone
those rats would sit and chat with me
they'd look me right in the eye
Suddenly I’d wasn’t Lonely
with That Rat by my side.

Oh the rats are big as cats
they’re taking over my flat
cruising through the garbage
perusing for a snack.
That lowly lonesome shack
sits by the railroad track
that train makes the shack shake
and the rats keep shaking back.

Poverty’s a tough place to be
but I’m in good company
Don’t I know it, Rodents own it,
But they don’t look down at me.
One Sad day the Men came
they said I had to leave
that rat shack was condemned
Then they evicted me.

Oh, The rusted tin roof leaks
and the busted front door creaks
but Im grateful cuz it beats
being homeless on the streets.

It’s been Many years since then
many tearful lessons learned
I Worked my way out of poverty
my MD degree was earned
now my fine home’s filled with luxuries
but sometimes I look back
remembering my history
when I was living in that old rat shack.
